1. Concepts of Curriculum and Purpose
of Curriculum Study
Actually I don’t really understand about this chapter. What I understand
from this chapter only about the definitions of curriculum, common concepts of
curriculum, and the five concurrent curricula. And what I don’t understand is
about a curriculum framework and the frameworks for curriculum analysis. I
don’t understand what framework mean and what the function of framework itself
for the curriculum.
From the scale 1-10, I put it 5 for
my understanding. Because only half of this chapter that I understand well.
2. Situating the Curriculum
The poin that I understand from this chapter is only about the four common
places of education. There are:
1. The learners
2. The teachers
3. The subject matter
4. The milieu
And about the story behind the
curriculum I don’t really understand. What is problem formulation, the story of
M:ACOS, and M:Acos itself I don’t know what is it. My understanding for this
chapter is 6 between the scale 1-10.
3. Theoretical Perspectives on Curriculum
When we study about this chapter, we devided our class into several group.
Each group has one subject to explain. And I think this more effective than
lecturing. Because I feel more understand using this way especially for my
part.
This chapter told about some perspective on curriculum, their proponents
and their implication toward discussion. There are:
1. Traditional
2. Experiential
3. Structure of the discipline
4. Behavioral
5. Constructivist
For this chapter, I put my
understanding in 8 between scale 1-10 because I quite understand what this
chapter told about. And I got the point of this chapter.
4. Curriculum Purpose and Content:
Basic Concepts
This chapter told about the curriculum purpose and content. This chapter,
as the previous chapter, the lecturer devided us into several groups. So, the
lecturer give us some question that we have to answer it.
This chapter told about:
- The differences between training and
education
- Levels of educational purpose
- Concepts of learning
- Content
- Five perspectives on purpose and
content
The most understand part from
this chapter is about the difference between training and education. Because in
my group, I get a job to search the difference between them.
- Training : contexts in which we can predict with some condition the
specific situation in which people will use what they learn.
- Education : contexts in which we cannot predict with any certainty the
situations in which people will use what they learn.
On a scale 1-10, I put it on 8.
Because I got many information that I understand from this chapter.
5. Curriculum Purpose and Content:
Conflicting Perspectives
In this chapter we discussed about some conflicting perspectives those are
behavioral and constructivist. We discussed about the fundamental concepts, the
teacher’s role, the objectives, and the affect of curriculum from each
perspectives.
I quite understand about this part of discussion, but for the limitation of
the two perspectives, I don’t understand. Because I don’t get the point of
these two limitation.
On the scale 1-10, my understanding for this chapter is 6. Because I don’t
understand for all the part of this subject.
6. Curriculum Organization: Basic
Concepts
In this sixth chapter, we mostly told about the basic of curriculum
organization. It is about the basic terms, basic structures, typical
macro-level curriculum organization, and organizational principles. What I
understand from this chapter is the definition about the curriculum
orgnanization, the difference between macro and micro level, and the difference
between vertical and horizontal dimensions.
About the basic structures nad typical macro-level curriculum
organizations, I still easy to understand it. But when talking about the
organizational princiles, I don’t get the general picture of this part.
For this chapter, my understanding is about 6 in a scale 1-10, because
there is part that difficult for me to understand it.
7. Curriculum Organization: Conflicting
Perspectives
The focus of this chapter is about the three approaches to organization.
There are: Top-Down approach, buttom-up approach, and project approach.
Top-down approach : curriculum should be organized
around fundamental concepts, themes, principles, and that from an understanding
of these fundamental concepts the students develop the ability to derive
particular facts and application.
Buttom-up approach : curriculum organization should reflect the
way people learn, rather than the way knowledge is organized in disciplines.
Project approach : the curriculum are organized around
student activities, which the teacher and students plan together.
I understand well about this chapter because the way we study it by
grouping and not lecturing that make me easy to accept the subject. For the scale
1-10, I think my understanding is in 8. Because almost I understand well about
this cahpter.
8. Frame Factors: Basic Concepts
Actually I don’t really understand about this chapter. Because I have no a
general image about waht is frame factors. But what I understand from this
chapter is only about the tasks of teaching.
There are five tasks of teaching: (1) coverage, (2) mastery, (3)
management, (4) positive affect, and (5) evaluation.
For this chapter I put my understanding is on a scale 4 from the scale
1-10. Because I don’t understand much from this chapter.
9. Curriculum Implementation:
Conflicting Approaches
This chapter mostly told about the two approaches to curriculum
implementation. Those are behavioral perspective and experiential perspective.
This chapter inform us about the key features:
1. Skill needed to implement it are
assumed to be specifiable and learnable.
2. Development efforts focused on
perfecting the materials.
3. Objectives are considered to be
agreement among developers, teachers and students.
4. Psychometric method
5. Curriculum implementation is
assessed by determining whether or not teacher practice meet the criteria of
curriculum developer.
What make me confuse is
actually what the key features is belong to. Beside, there is a collaborative
approach that I do not understand. For the scale, I put it on 5. Because there
are some part of this chapter that I don’t understand.
10. Curriculum Evaluation: Basic
Concepts
This chapter discussed about the basic terminology, the purpose and roles
of evaluation, the standardized testing as a means of making decisions, the
role of technology in evaluation, evaluation planning as curriculum analysis,
and perspectives on curriculum evaluation.
What I understand from this chapter only about the role of technology in
evaluation. There are some role of technology in evaluation:
- Test administration
- Test preparation for students
- Calculator use
- Instantaneous scoring
- Test generation software
- Publication of test results
Nothing from this chapter I understand well except this part. I don’t know
why I don’t understand. Maybe because I focused more on the assignment than the
lesson itself. For the scale I put it on 2 from the sclae 1-10.
11. Curriculum Evaluation: Conflicting
Perspectives
This is the last chapter of the book. It is about the conflicting
perspectives. In this chapter, we learn about how to measure based evaluation.
There are some way to measure based evaluation:
- Scientific
- Objectives-driven
- Group or individually administered
- Norm or criterion referenced
- Standardized
on the scale 1-10, I put it on
3. Because I don’t understand much about this chapter.
FILM M-ACOS
Actually I don’t understand
what this film is talking about. What I get from this is Man: A Course of
Study, an educational program that looked to the Canadian Arctic to help
american students see their culture in a new way.
I think this film is show us
about some culture in some country. And this film also help how to respect
other culture. From the scale 1-10, I think it is on 5 because I only get little
information from this film. What make me difficult to understand this film
because the language. I can’t get all what they say.
