Firstly
when I looked at the cover of the novel, it not really interesting, but when I
read the epilogue, I guess that this would be an interesting story because it
told about someone’s life in his latest six month of his life.
The main
character of this novel is Toby Marlow (the great actor who got an illness and
had been judge by the doctor that his life only six months again). In this novel also
there are some characters, like David Marlow (Toby’s son), Cynthia (Toby’s
love. Had been living together for forty years illegally), Barbara Evings (David’s
girlfriend) Mr. Ostretter (Toby’s personal doctor).
The most part of the
story that is interesting for me is when Toby and Cynthia got married. After
they got married, they gave their fiancée a wedding gift. Than Toby gave Cythia
some bird. The bird has been trained to say something in the party. And the
bird say “I love you, Cyn” when Toby asked him to squawk. And it is really
romantic story.
The most part of the
story that make me confuse when I read this novel is when finally Toby asked Cynthia
to get married with him after forty years ago they lived together illegally
without marriage. Why Toby doesn’t asked her to get married with him from the
first time they falling in love.
The part of the story
that I dislike most is when Toby first meeting with Cynthia in his office. One
day, Cynthia came to Toby’s office to meet with him because she’s one of his
fans. And when Toby saw her for the first time, he fall in love with her and exactly
asked her to making love with him. Firstly, she refused it but afterwards she
accepted it. I think her attitude is lower woman self esteem and I really
dislike it.
Actually, I have no
some experiences that related to this novel. But I think this story is often occurring
to someone who knows that he would die in the short time. Of course he would do
some good activity and made his beloved person happy.
I supposed that in the
end of the story Toby and Cynthia would not get married. Because Toby knows
that his life is just six month anymore. And his decision to asked Cynthia to
get married with him is a mistake. Because if they get married, that only made
Cynthia felt sad when Toby died.
The larger issues that
raised by the story is about Toby’s life in six month and about his son, David,
that he impregnate Barbara, his girlfriend. But Barbara did not want to get
married with him because she known that David not really loved her.
Actually, to read this
novel is not taking a long time. But I still have some difficulties in managing
the time. Because in that time, I have many agenda to do. But finally I can
finished read this novel on time and I sure I can read the other novel and
finished it on time.
